Successful completion of AgriRenaissance project

The National Paying Agency (NPA), together with partners from 4 EU Member States, Spain, Portugal, Poland and Italy, successfully completed the AgriRenaissance project, which aimed to promote scientific and technological innovations in the agri-food sector. The project was funded by the European Union (EU) Interreg Europe programme.

The aim of the project – to share examples of good practice in the implementation of regional and rural development programmes for innovations in agri-food sector and thus accelerate their implementation. The project was implemented in close cooperation with the Lithuanian social partners: Science, Innovation and Technology Agency, Lithuanian Institute of Agrarian Economics, Lithuanian Vytautas Magnus University–Academy of Agriculture, Lithuanian Agricultural Advisory Service, Lithuanian Public Health Sciences Institute, Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture.

The 4 year-duration project started in 2018, and on 28 February the final project online meeting with the national stakeholders took place. The discussions touched upon the results of the project as well as  on possible further collaboration.

During the meeting the  implementation of the Action Plan for Lithuania comprising 4 actions, worked out by the NPA within the framework of the AgriRenaissance project, has been highlighted.

Creation of a Agr-Food section on the Open R&D Lithuania platform is one of the four actions of the Action Plan for Lithuania, approved by the Secretariat of the Interreg Europe programme in 2020. The new Agr-Food section contributes to increasing the international visibility and accessibility of project results in agri-food sector. The information comprises data on the  projects implemented and / or still under implementation and financed by the national and EU funds.

Open R&D Lithuania is a network of innovation infrastructure, services and competencies in the Baltic States. The aim of this platform, created in 2014 by the Agency for Science, Innovation and Technology (MITA), is to show the country's scientific potential and achievements on national and international level. All information, published in a database, is freely accessible to the public.

Another implemented action of the Action Plan for Lithuania – the simplification of rules for the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) projects. In accordance with the action, respective amendments and improvements were introduced to the requirements of EIP measure under the RDP of Lithuania 2014-2020, related to the existing project calls, selection criteria for projects and eligibility criteria for applicants.

These projects are managed by the NPA and are supported by the “Support to the establishment of EIP activity groups and development of their activities” activity area of the “Cooperation” measure, financed by the Rural Development Programme for Lithuania 2014-2020. The amendments, initiated by the NPA, will apply also to the new programming period 2021–2027.

Another action, extending the scope of regular brokerage events, organised by MITA, ensures yet another possibility of engaging and bringing together potential partners and stakeholders for future joint projects in agri-food sector, providing a live platform for exchanging ideas, sharing experience, good practices and networking.

In June 2020 the Lithuanian Parliament (the Seimas) passed the law on establishment of the Innovation Promotion Fund (Fund), which is also among the measures defined in the Action Plan for Lithuania. The objective of the Fund – to attract more investments in research, experimental development and innovation (R & D & I). The Fund has been established in 2021, and it contributes to the efficient financing of R & D & I activities in Lithuania, including the agri-food sector.
