H2020 ENVISION project develops innovative monitoring tools for sustainable farming

The National Paying Agency (NPA) participates in the international ENVISION project "Monitoring of Sustainable Agricultural Practices", funded by the European Union (EU) research and innovation programme Horizon 2020, and together with partners aims to implement continuous and systematic monitoring of land cover and climate-friendly agricultural practices.

Basing on data of the Global Earth Observation System (GEOSS) and the European Commission's Earth Observation programme Copernicus, maps of cultivated crop types, soil organic carbon, organic farming, meadow mowing and soil erosion data have been created and are currently tested within the scope of the project.

The aim is that from 2023, the results of the project could be used by all the EU paying agencies implementing new strategic plans.

By participating in the ENVISION project with partners from Greece, Slovenia, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Serbia and Cyprus, NPA not only gains experience, which is valuable in further development and improvement of the Automatic Field Continuous Monitoring System (ALNSIS), but also plans to use the tools developed by ENVISION in its daily activities as well as to open data for farmers, scientific organisations and other institutions.

ALNSIS, which was put into use last year, makes it possible throughout the territory of Lithuania to identify farmers who simulate farming and to allocate more support to those who actually carry out agricultural activities and who comply with the requirements for receiving EU support. ALNSIS allows to reduce the number of NPA visits to farms, provides support in informing farmers about obligations that have not been yet fulfilled.
